SOLAR SYSTEM:

Passive Solar Design

Southern orientation provides natural day lighting and passive solar heating
(less use of electricity for lights and heat, & it “feels” better.)

Photovoltaics (PVs)

40 Sanyo HIP-200 BA3 (200) watt photovoltaic modules 2 Xantrex GT utility inverters.
8 Kilowatt PV array, grid tied to Puget Sound Energy (PSE).  PSE pays $.15 per kilowatt generated and “banks” watts generated in the summer for use in the fall and winter.  The PVs will generate approximately 9,200 kilowatts/year and average household consumption is 9,000.  This should be a net zero energy home!  The PVs will generate more electricity than will normally be used.  The homeowner will receive $1,350/year from PSE for the electricity generated until 2014 and other legislation can extend or increase this.

30 Tube Thermomax Hot Water System

Provides hot water for domestic use.
Stored in two super insulated hot water tanks.
Heating hot water is second largest use of energy in a home.

Solar Energy is clean, efficient, renewable, non-polluting and low/no maintenance.

BUILDING ENVELOPE:

An effective building envelope that allows for air circulation and water drainage protects the integrity of a home and prevents rot, mold, mildew and structural damage.

Rain Screen Wall System

-fibercement siding (primed and painted on all six sides)
-battens to allow an airspace behind the siding
-building paper as a moisture retarder-
CDX plywood sheathing
-2x6 wood stud wall with foamed-in-place insulation
-1/2” extra strength gypsum wall board finish

STRUCTURAL FRAMING & INSULATION:

Advanced Framing

Advanced framing is a series of techniques that use at least 20% less lumber and increase insulation space. The house is structurally engineered to put the wood only where it is needed. The techniques used in this house include:

  • Studs 24” on-center (not the common 16” oc)
  • Most of the window and door headers have been eliminated
  • 2 stud corners and single top plates
  • Rim joists used as a structural beam
  • in line/stack framing (loads are transferred directly to foundation)
  • Trusses in the carport instead of a stick-framed roof

Insulation

BioBased Insulation www.biobased.net is a blown in soy-based insulation product that has a better insulation value than standard fiberglass insulation or other blown-in-batts products.  It fills cracks and crevices often left out in other insulation systems. The foamed-in insulation is a vital component of this house’s energy conservation.

HEATING SYSTEM:

Radiant Floor Heating

WIRSBO-proMIX101  www.wirsbo.com

The main floor will have radiant heat. PEX plastic piping is imbedded in the concrete floor.  Hot water is circulated through the pipes which warms the concrete and in turn warms the people and objects in the home. Radiant heat uses less energy and feels better to people.  The heat rises from the floor and warms people and objects rather than warming all the air in the space.  Dust and pollen fall to the floor and can be cleaned unlike a forced air system that tends to continually blow contaminants through the air.

Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV)

Venmar  H

Every room is ducted to the HRV which circulates air in the entire house to provide healthy indoor air quality.  The interior air is sent to the HRV which saves 85% of the heat before sending it outside and then warms and filters the incoming outside air.  The incoming air goes through a HEPA filter to remove impurities before it is sent throughout the house.  HRVs provide optimum indoor air quality and conserving energy at the same time.

Electric Boiler

Slant/Fin Monitron, model EH

http://www.slantfin.com/product-monitron-eh.html

The high efficiency electric boiler’s function is to heat the water for the radiant floor system.  The home will be generating

What is LEED for homes?

  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
  • A rating system to evaluate homes on sustainability issues including:
    • Efficient use of  energy resources
    • Efficient use of water resources
    • Efficient use of construction resources (through better design, material selection and construction practices)
    • Efficient use of land resources
    • Enhanced indoor air quality
